History
The modules are designed to provide background information on the self-determination movement for people with disabilities and the history of the Virginia Department of Education’s I’m Determined Project. These modules provide a strong foundation for beginning your journey toward self-determination.
Module One: The History of Disability
When you hear the word disability, do you think of physical and attitudinal barriers? Why do you think that happens?
Module Two: Disability History and Awareness Month
Did you know that the legislation that recognizes October as Virginia Disability History and Awareness Month (DHAM) was enacted as a result of the advocacy and leadership of youth who attended Virginia’s Youth Leadership Forum?
Module Three: Parents Developing Self-Determination in their Youth
We acknowledge parents for being strong role models and for partnering with educators and other professionals to support programs that develop leadership and self-confidence in our students.
Module Four: Students Determined to take Control of their Education and their Lives
Life can present challenges and major changes for all young people. Self-determination allows young people to make choices and decisions to direct their own lives.
Module Five: Teachers as Implementers
This module focuses on teachers as implementers of the I’m Determined vision and goals.
Module Six: Time to Reflect
This final module is devoted to reflection: both as educators and administrators working in the I’m Determined project, and as a participant in these modules.
