2022 Youth & Family Summit

- Location: James Madison University - Festival Conference & Student Center
About
The Youth and Parent Summit is a three-day event held each June and sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Partnership for People with Disabilities. Youth with disabilities from across the Commonwealth meet to network and discuss issues of importance to youth and young adults with disabilities.
Below are some key logistics for this exciting opportunity:
π Date: June 14-16, 2022 (Tuesday evening – Thursday afternoon)
π Location: Festival Conference & Student Center @ James Madison University
ππ½ Event type: Face-to-face event [with a virtual component offered to youth who would rather not attend in person, are not accepted, or don’t meet the requirements]
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Attendees: We will accept up to 50 youth residing in Virginia
π― Ages: 14-16-year-olds (Youth outside of this age range are encouraged to participate in the virtual component. No application is necessary for the virtual component.)
π COVID protocol: We will follow JMU event policies and will communicate those policies as we get closer to the event
The application below is for the in-person event only. Youth who are 14-16 years old (during the summit dates) and want to attend in-person should apply. If you do not fall within that age range OR if you would rather access the virtual component you DO NOT need to fill out an application. Access to the virtual component will be added to the event page linked below closer to the date of the event.
The Youth Sessions for the virtual component are created for Virginia youth with disabilities 13-21 years old.
Event Focus
This year youth and families will learn about 3 key components of self-determination: Competence, Autonomy, and Relatedness. Youth will attend sessions that help them understand these three components, how to put them into practice, and how to plan for continued growth in each area.
Parents will attend separate sessions built specifically for them, focusing on the same components and also bringing in awareness of resources and agencies available to families in Virginia.
As details are finalized, new information will be added to this page. We appreciate your patience as we continue to build this event.
Schedule
Detailed schedules will be emailed to all accepted participants.
